A Partner, Ally & Advocate

Incorporated in 1998, the Glass Manufacturing Industry Council (GMIC) is a 501(c)(6) nonprofit trade association focused on representing the interests of the glass manufacturing industry.

Bridging all segments of glass manufacturing, GMIC does for our members what would be challenging for them to do alone.

We act as an advocate on their behalf with governments and trade organizations. We provide valuable education in the form of technical programs, symposia, and conferences. We coordinate technical initiatives. We provide members with industry intelligence. We help position the national glass industry to better meet today’s sustainability demands.

We network and collaborate with other consortia and trade associations to bring new insights and opportunities to our members. We help develop workforces. We never stop promoting the usage of glass and glass products and the value that glass brings to both businesses and consumers.

Our Objectives

The result of extensive interviews with leaders within every segment of the glass manufacturing industry, GMIC’s strategic objectives represent our primary goals as we work to keep the glass industry thriving in a decarbonized world:

Promote & Facilitate the Use of Glass
This includes educating government bodies on the glass manufacturing industry as well as educating other target audiences on the benefits of glass and its potential to positively impact their business or organization.

Position the Industry to Better Meet Sustainability Demands
This includes helping to facilitate the progression of new technologies geared toward sustainable glass manufacturing. Tactics include engagement with and between colleges and universities, research facilities, and government agencies.

Represent the Glass Industry
This includes making sure that the voices of our members are heard by other glass manufacturers, product suppliers and distributors, other trade associations, and government organizations. The success of the glass industry is the success of GMIC.

1998

The Glass Manufacturing Industry Council (GMIC) was founded in 1998 to coordinate the needs of glass manufacturers around the world, across all industry segments. At that point, although all glass segments—container, flat, fiber, and specialty—were well represented by trade associations, there was no trade association that bridged all segments of glass manufacturing.

ONGOING IMPACT

Early in GMIC’s history, the U.S. Department of Energy began to work closely with GMIC as the coordinator of the DOE’s objectives to reduce energy use within the national glass industry. Since then, the DOE underwrote the work to create the glass industry Roadmap for the Future and also provided substantial funding for the development of the submerged combustion melter, a technology that promises to have a major impact on glass melting.

TODAY

Today, GMIC remains focused on efforts and initiatives that support every aspect of glass manufacturing and promote the use of glass across a myriad of industries and consumer applications. We look forward to continuing to work on behalf of our members as a partner, ally, and advocate.
